个人简介

Upon recently graduating from the University of Wisconsin- Madison with a major in English and a certificate to teach English to speakers of other languages, I wanted to fulfill a dream of teaching abroad.

I traveled to Mexico in the fall of 2009 to teach English for 2 semesters. The students ranged in age from 5-60 years old. The class sizes were relatively small- anywhere from a one-on-one session to a class of 15 students at a time.

While in Mexico, I was able to realize my strengths in teaching the English language. I am excellent at creating lesson plans based on the curriculum and making each and every lesson fun for the students. There was constantly laughter emanating from my classroom. Learning should be fun, and I felt I did that with my classes by playing games, creating small art projects, as well as effective pair and group work during class time.

I also had the opportunity to try different methods of teaching. I incorporated total physical response into all of my classes rather than just having them fill out information in a book. I used realia with my students so they could touch things in their hands as opposed to looking at them on a page. Flashcards were made in order for the students to visualize the grammar being taught. Music was played if it was relevant to the lessons. Videos were watched and discussed between students. I was able to see each student learning the language when I was correcting their quizzes and exams.

As a full-time teacher in Mexico, I have seen that I am capable of teaching English to any age range and make learning fun and interesting for the students, all while seeing them comprehend what is being taught to them.  I want to be able to do the same thing in another country over the summer.

If given the opportunity to be a camp teacher, I would bring all my skills to camp in order to make it fun and enjoyable for the children. I will also have more practice in teaching the English language, and in the end, gain more experience in teaching.
